The Start of KTM Bikes

This Austrian-based company emerged in the 1930s. The initials each refer to a component of the company's history. The "K" refers to “Kraftfahrzeug”, which means motor vehicle in German. The "T" references “Trunkenpolz”, which honors company founder Hans Trunkenpolz. The "M" stands for “Mattighofen”, which is the small Austrian town where the company's headquarters is found.

 

Before World War Two, the company served as a vehicle repair shop. Once the war ended, there was less need for these services. The company founder then focused on building his own motorcycles. His first prototype, the R100, was unveiled in 1951. Ernst Kronreif later became a shareholder in the company to help it expand. The "K" in KTM motorcycles then shifted to referencing him.

 

Company Changes

After Kronreif and Trunkenpolz died in the early 1960s, Hans' son Erich Trunkenpolz became the company leader. Over the next several years, he focused on expanding KTM bikes around the world. He branched out into the United States in 1978.

 

When Erich died in 1989, the company went through some changes. It broke up into four entities in 1992, but three of them were reunited in 2015. During all this time, the company continued working to develop cutting-edge motorcycles to appeal to customers around the world.

 

KTM Motorcycles Today

KTM bikes now build on their legacy of innovation and racing. The Motocross and Cross-Country lines are often seen winning victories at various races. The Enduro line are powered by massive four-stroke engines that make them street-legal speed demons.
