The Yamaha Motor Company has made itself a household name by producing top-tier powersports machines across several industries. Since 1955, they’ve made land-based and marine-based transportation options with powerful engines that reflect decades of engineering prowess. In 1887, Torakusu Yamaha established his business in the Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan. Musical instruments, including pianos and organs, were the company’s initial focus. You can still see this musical heritage today in the company’s logo: three interlocked piano tuning forks.

Following the two World Wars, most Japanese manufacturers began to diversify their product lines to make up lost profits and also make use of the war-time manufacturing machines they had at hand. Genichi Kawakami, then-president of Yamaha Corporation, determined that small motorcycle engines would be a good use of the company’s resources.

The Yamaha Motor Company split off from its parent corporation in 1955 with a specific focus on building reliable and fast two-stroke motorcycles. They began producing four-stroke models in 1968. Popular motorcycle designs continued to roll off their assembly lines throughout the 1960s and 1970s, increasing the company’s profile in the field of powersports.

Following their decades-long tenure in the motorcycle industry, the Yamaha Motor Company branched out into other powersports fields. They entered both the utility and all-terrain vehicle markets along with the personal watercraft market during the 1980s.

The 1986 introduction of the WaveRunner® 500 made marine powersports an incredibly popular pastime. Because of the WaveRunner’s success, Yamaha became a leader in the personal watercraft industry, releasing further crafts under the Super Jet®, WaveBlaster® and WaveJammer® names.

These days, the Yamaha Motor Company maintains their position as a leader in the powersports industry with their well-designed motorized vehicles. Racers love their ATVs and motorcycles for their speed and agility, while watersports enthusiasts rely on the WaveRunner for its easy handling and fast acceleration.
